“LATTICE AND LOTUS” (18 x 24 in.)

While traveling in northern India I spent some time in Kashmir. While in Srinagar, I stayed on Dal Lake in a houseboat. The “Ceylon” was ornately carved and in the front there was a sitting area where I often watched the world go by. This type of lotus flower grew in the lake and was often used as decoration around the houseboat. These flowers were cut, put in a black vase and then set out front on a bench. The perspective is looking down and one can see through the lattice the blue sky being reflected off the water surface outside. The specks of light coming through the lattice helps break up the dark shadows of the wood. One notices the depth of the opening flower by the delicate shading of the individual petals.
