Parthenon Corner” (18×24)
Looking up at this corner of the Parthenon is simply awe inspiring. The sense of its immensity as well as its architectural/cultural significance can be overwhelming. When I created this painting I deliberately left off the top of the corner . One can use the imagination to complete it. I wanted the eye to begin at the base and then extend up the columns to the areas where ancient friezes use to be, then back around and down through more columns…perhaps pausing where the blue of the sky was visible. The lines of the columns appear parallel but in reality taper slightly in at the top. For me what makes this painting work is the quality of light/shadow (even light in the shadows) and the weathered nature of the ruin itself.
